First Face Models Countdown Review Featuring Australian Supermodel Gemma Ward

The Perth-born model was the youngest-ever to grace the cover of American Vogue.

Before She Was Famous:

Gemma Ward was the second child and her father is a doctor and her mother a nurse. She has younger twin brothers and an older sister who is also a model. Gemma Ward was educated at Perth’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Shenton College. As said herself in a Teen Vogue interview, she accompanied her friends to a modeling competition and ended up being scouted herself:

“I had come straight from my auntie and uncle’s farm, and I was wearing this big gray barn jacket with mud all over it. When the scout came up to me, I said, No, thank you. They forged my mom’s signature (for mandatory parental consent) and pushed me in front of the cameras.”

She was discovered in 2002, while accompanying her friends to the Aussie modeling competition “Search for a Supermodel“. Gemma recalls, “I came to watch my friends. I was sitting there in the crowd when the agent from Perth came over. I didn’t even want to enter. It was a bit of chance. I was so shocked when I got my first job” Gemma later told Teen Vogue, “I had come straight from my auntie and uncle’s farm, and I was wearing this big gray barn jacket with mud all over it. When the scout came up to me, I said, No, thank you. But my friends were like, Hell, yes! They forged my mom’s signature and pushed me in front of the cameras”.

The teenager didn’t win the competition, but with her fragile, unique look, two modeling agencies soon came calling.

Even though Gemma Ward didn’t win the competition, a top Australian modeling agency picked her up after seeing a small picture of her in Kurv, an Australian-produced arts, culture and fashion magazine. Soon she was signed by that Australian modeling agency, and two other international modeling agencies later came in to the scene in addition to her original Australian modeling agency in order to give her further global representation.

Career Highlights

At the age of 15, Gemma Ward was already well known in the Australian fashion industry and at 16 years of age, she was the youngest model to be listed by American Vogue as one of the nine “It Girls” in the modeling world. In September 2004, Gemma Ward became the youngest fashion model to grace the cover of United States Vogue, and the first model to appear on the cover of Teen Vogue. Top fashion magazines such as Harper’s BAZAAR, W Magazine, and Pop all regularly featured Gemma. She has also modeled for an enviable list of fashion houses, including Balenciaga, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Prada, Valentino, Christian Dior, Hermes, Swarovski, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Yves Saint Laurent. Altogether, Gemma Ward has appeared on 30 covers of Vogue Magazine worldwide.

Modeling

Her look inspired a new generation of baby doll-like models and in Allure Magazine (October 2006), Gemma Ward is described as “the model of the moment”. Allure’s creative director Paul Cavaco stated: “We went through a period that was very va-va-voom, but now the pendulum has swung back. Gemma is ethereal, not earthy”. Photographer Michael Thompson says, “She’s an exotic blonde, the rarest of creatures”. Gemma Ward appeared on the cover of the first issue of Vogue India, photographed by photographer Patrick Demarchelier. This is the second time Gemma Ward has appeared on an inaugural issue – the first time being the first ever cover of Vogue China in 2005.

In July 2007, earning at an estimated total of $3 million in the previous 12 months, Forbes Magazine named her 10th in the list of the World’s 15 Top-Earning Supermodels.

Vogue Paris declared her one of the top 30 models of the 2000s.

Gemma has worked with the industries most renowned photographers including Mario Sorrenti, Phil Poynter, Mikael Jansson, Nathaniel Goldberg, David Sims and Steven Meisel.

Gemma Ward has also fulfilled her childhood passion for acting by starring in three films. Her debut in 2001 was the Aussie coming-of-age drama Pink Pyjamas. More recently, Gemma starred alongside Toni Collette and Rhys Wakefield in the award winning film The Black Balloon. The film had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany in February 2008, where it won a Crystal Bear award. Later that year, she appeared with Liv Tyler in the suspense thriller The Strangers. John Mayer has also featured the young beauty in his music video for the single Daughters.

Retirement Claims

In August 2008, reports surfaced that Ward was to retire from modeling to pursue acting. However, reports were quickly dismissed by Ward herself saying: “I was surprised to wake up this morning and read news of my own retirement. While I am taking some time off currently to rest and enjoy the company of friends and family, I am still very much a (excited and enthusiastic) working model and actress. I’m only 20, for God’s sakes”.

In the summer of 2011 Gemma Ward will be playing the part in “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” as Tamara, Queen of the Mermaids, and meet Jack Sparrow during his search for the elusive Fountain of Youth.

Above: Supermodels Karolina Kurkova in yellow lingerie with friends Gisele Bundchen, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Ana Beatriz Barros modeling for lingerie powerhouse Victoria’s Secret.

First face countdown for Milan Fashion Week Spring Summer 2011. The results of this seasons are: 10) Monika Jagaciak, 9) Karolina Kurkova, 8) Natasha Poly, 7) Daphne Groeneveld, 6) Frida Gustavsson, 5) Karlie Kloss, 4) Lindsey Wixson, 3) Ginta Lapina, 2) Karmen Pedaru, 1) Freja Beha. So the beautiful model Freja Beha is the winner of the First Face Spring Summer 2011 fashion runway countdown!

Today we feature Supermodel Karolina Kurkova

Karolína Isela Kurková (born in 1984) is a Czech model best known as a former Victoria’s Secret Angel and an aspiring actress. Famed photographer Mario Testino said of Kurková: “The proportions of her body and her face, as well as her energy level, make her a model who could fit almost into any moment”. Vogue editor Anna Wintour called her the “next supermodel”.

Karolína Kurková was born in Děčín, Czechoslovakia, to Josef Kurka, a Czech basketball player, and a Slovak mother. While Kurková was young, she was made fun of for her height. But after a friend sent photos of Kurková to an agency in Prague, she at 15 years of age landed a runway appearance, as well as a commercial and print advertising campaign. She later traveled to Milan, Italy to gain more experience and signed a modeling contract with Miuccia Prada.

In September 1999 Kurková appeared in the American edition of fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue, and after moving to New York City at the age of 17, graced the cover of the February 2001 edition becoming one of the youngest models ever to appear on the magazine’s cover.

Following her Vogue cover, Kurková became recognized at haute couture fashion shows. Additionally, the lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret chose her to be a part of 2000’s fashion show webcast, though she was only 16 at the time. Prominent fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent signed Kurková to contracts, while print campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, John Galliano, Chanel, Christian Dior, Hugo Boss, Versace, H&M, and others helped expose her even more. In the 2002 Victoria’s Secret fashion show, she wore the multi-million dollar fantasy bra, worth almost $10 million and designed by Hearts on Fire. Other runway credits of hers include Alberta Ferretti, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Karl Lagerfeld, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, and Vera Wang.

Kurková was named “Model of the Year” at the 2002 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, in part for her work ethic, having worked approximately twenty-three weeks straight.

Kurková has appeared in almost twenty Vogue magazine covers internationally, including the French, Italian, UK, German, Russian, Greek, and Korean editions, and has also appeared in international editions of Elle, Vanity Fair, and The Face. She has worked with noted fashion photographers like Steven Klein, Mario Sorrenti, and Mario Testino.

After being contracted as a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2005, she was featured in the 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, showcasing the $6.5 million fantasy bra decked with almost 2000 diamonds weighing 800 carats (160 g) and a centerpiece diamond brooch weighing 10 carats (2.0 g). As a Victoria’s Secret Angel, she received a star on the Hollywood “Walk of Fame” prior to the 2007 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, appeared on the February 2008 cover of Esquire, re-creating the classic 1966 Angie Dickinson cover for the magazine’s 75th anniversary, and was chosen as part of People magazine’s 100 most beautiful people in the world. In December 2007, she could be seen in print ads for Dell.

Kurková is among the world’s top-earning models earning millions of United States dollars per year from her high powered modeling contracts. She has ranked among the top ten most highly paid models in the Forbes annual lists of the highest earning models in the world ranking as high as number six on planet earth.

In November 2008, E! Entertainment Television voted her the world’s sexiest woman, beating the likes of Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Gisele Bundchen, and her fellow Angels Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima. Karolina Kurkova also appeared in the live action 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra film.

What Are The Fees And Commissions That Modeling Agencies Charge Their Models And Do Models Really Need A Modeling Agency?

Many potential models often wonder what modeling agencies actually do for their models and supermodels and if it is really necessary for models to be represented by a modeling agency. Many young women also wonder what modeling agencies charge for their services and if they will actually be able to afford the fees and commissions that their modeling agency will charge them for their services. Thus, ZARZAR MODELING AGENCY known throughout the world as simply ZARZAR MODELS brings to you the answers to one of the most common modeling questions asked by potential new models: do I really need a modeling agency and how much will it cost me to have a modeling agency represent me throughout my modeling career?

The way agencies make money, and this goes for all legitimate agencies around the world, is that they charge the model a fee, normally around 20%, and the client, normally around 20%.

An example would be a client books a model for $1,000 per day. The model goes and works for the 8 hours. The agency then adds 20% to the $1,000 and bills the client for $1,200. The client pays and then the agency pays the model $1,000 minus 20% or $800. So here’s a question: if the agency charges the model 20% and the client 20% what percent does the agency earn on a booking? Is it 40%? – wrong. The entire invoice was $1,200 remember? And the agency earns $400 ($200 from the model and client each). So if you divide $400 by $1,200 you get approximately 33% which is how much an agency earns on a normal booking.

There are also no guarantees since in many cases an agency will work days, or even weeks, with a client on a booking only to have the client cancel it at the last minute, meaning the agency worked all those days or weeks for 33% of $0. That means zero or nothing for the arithmetically challenged.

Now to answer the more difficult question: do models really need a modeling agency? This question is actually a lot easier to answer than the previous modeling question regarding modeling fees charged by modeling agencies. The answer is simple: simply look around at the images above and below (those beautiful magazine covers filled with extremely successful supermodels for the rare few who missed them while reading this article). Finally, for those that still don’t get it (arithmetically challenged again) we have a modeling formula for them: totally unknown female model (and usually clueless about the inner workings of the fashion modeling industry) + world class modeling agency = sexy supermodels on world class magazine covers for the lucky few that make the cut. Add the modeling advise, guidance, training, and thousands of other advantages to having a modeling agency represent you and you may actually wonder why they charge so little for their services.

One final thought…If an agency (or multiple agencies) take you from $0 to $25,000,000.00 (that is $25 million United States Dollars for the arithmetically challenged) in annual earnings as Forbes reported for Supermodel Gisele Bundchen, do you really believe that such level of outstanding modeling performance would have been achieved without a modeling agency or agencies? Think about it for a moment: a client wants to lower his or her expenses as much as possible. You and your agency want to earn as much as possible, so the question is this: if your agency makes more money when you make more money, and if they are highly skilled in the negotiating table, would you prefer to handle the contracts or would you prefer to leave it to the professionals from your mother agency?
