2017 will be remembered as the year that Victoria’s Secret expanded into China by opening its first full store in Shanghai with additional stores later opening in Chengdu and Beijing. Victoria’s Secret already has 26 Victoria’s Secret Beauty & Accessory stores in China plus another five in Hong Kong (these Victoria’s Secret Beauty & Accessory stores that already exist in China are small shops focused on beauty products and accessories with no bras or panties being sold). China is expected to equal if not exceed the United States in Victoria’s Secret sales in the long term, and because of this huge potential Victoria’s Secret parent company L Brands (NYSE: LB) decided that having a fashion show in China would make the world take notice of their aspirations for global expansion, specially into the Asian markets.
At one point, having a fashion show in China must have seemed like a good idea, maybe the best of all ideas. After all, Victoria’s Secret (the world’s #1 lingerie brand) was making a major push to expand its business around the world, so having the 2017 Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Shanghai China made perfect sense, and asking what could possibly go wrong by having the world’s most famous and prestigious fashion show in China might have seemed absurd, or even borderline ridiculous. However, as it turned out, basically many things went wrong in China.

Broadway star Leslie Odom Jr. and classical pianist Yundi Li light up the Victoria’s Secret fashion runway in Shanghai China as they perform “Forever Young” and “Winter Song” while the extremely beautiful Victoria’s Secret Angels walk down the Victoria’s Secret fashion runway.
Singing superstar Katy Perry, scheduled to be a performer, was reportedly denied a visa by the Chinese government, and many models scheduled to make appearances ran into similar issues. Making things worse, it was reported that the Victoria’s Secret team in Shanghai China was prohibited from sending out press releases until they had been reviewed by the government. Then celebrities and fashion journalists assigned to cover the event had to pull out when they weren’t given Chinese visas.
Soon, even supermodels and famous models were getting their Chinese visas denied. American fashion model Gigi Hadid (who has almost 40 million Instagram followers), who was scheduled to appear at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, was reportedly denied a visa. Soon after, Russian and Ukrainian Victoria’s Secret models were denied entry into China without any explanation.
Even relatively simple tasks turned into a struggle. It was even reported that Chinese authorities scrutinized television crews trying to film the Victoria’s Secret models outside Shanghai’s Mercedes-Benz Arena as though they were national security threats. Talk about being paranoid (a fashion show filled with the world’s most beautiful women walking in sexy lingerie is probably the furthest thing from politically sensitive material that one could possibly imagine).

To be fair, the 2017 Victoria’s Secret fashion show was a beautiful fashion show featuring famous singers singing while the world’s most beautiful women walked down the runway. Highlights of the 2017 Victoria’s Secret fashion show included supermodel Karlie Kloss (who went platinum blonde) making her big return in Shanghai after taking a break from working with the brand and supermodel Candice Swanepoel doing the same after sitting out last year after having her baby son.
Harry Styles (originally a member of the famous British boy band One Direction), Miguel, Yundi Li, and Jane Zhang performed while the extremely beautiful Victoria’s Secret models walked on the runway. Then there were the Balmain outfits designed by Olivier Rousteing (a famous French fashion designer and the creative director of Balmain), and of course, no Victoria’s Secret fashion show would be complete without the Fantasy Bra (made from diamonds and gems worth millions of dollars) and worn this year by Brazilian fashion model Lais Ribeiro.
